Hagia Sophia, or St. Sophia, stands out against the Istanbul skyline.
Hagia Sophia, Greek for Holy Wisdom, was built in 537 and served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral til 1453,
except for the years between 1204 and 1261 when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral.
The structure was a mosque from 1453 until 1931.
In 1935, it was secularized and opened as a museum.
